Transformative resume building and interview coaching for college seniors

CONFIDENCE

Helen Koster

It seems quite automatic to judge our value in comparison to what others have accomplished. It’s hard to sidestep that impulse because, in fact, we live in a culture known for its competitiveness.

Our confidence can sometimes erode because of our cultural values and how they influence us. It happens.

When we most need confidence is during the times of transition and change. It’s the in-between times of uncertainty where we need the tools to tap into our confidence.

In between college graduation and landing your first job is one of those times.

Here is one quick way you can build confidence in yourself to prepare for your job interviews.

Confidence

When we most need confidence is during the times of transition and change. It’s the in-between times of uncertainty where we need the tools to tap into our confidence.

For every task you have as a bullet on your resume, ask yourself a couple of simple questions:

Here’s an example:

A student who was a director of his college neighborhood had this bullet on his resume:

  • Tasked with evaluating residential college recommendations.

Question: What was the positive purpose of that task?

Answer:    Primarily, to consider changing the roommate selection system to an open- pick system.

Question: How did you arrive at your result?

Answer:  I formed a committee to get a range of input.

This student’s bullet evolved:

  • Formed a committee to evaluate residential college recommendations. Resulted in the implementation of an open-pick system.

Now that’s something to be proud of! Answers to these two simple questions demonstrated the student’s abilities and accomplishments far beyond his original bullet.

The questions I suggest are tools to help remind you who you are starting with the tasks you performed in your jobs and volunteer work.

And what do you think the added bonus is to asking and answering these questions?

You are relying on your experience to build your confidence rather than wondering how your experience stacks up against someone else who is interviewing for the same job! That’s a relief!

When we work together, I’ll help you tap into that confidence, highlight your abilities and accomplishments, and put forth a more unique and meaningful resume. Contact me to get started.
